"TaterSpike 1" Test
02/07/2006
Nothing good can possibly come of this...
Currently designated "TaterSpike 1" this is my first and certainly worst new projectile design.
If I don't lobotomize myself with this thing it should make a nasty hole in pretty much anything downrange. Stay tuned...

Third Shot's The Charm...
Testing the "TaterSpike 1" we finally got a perfect hit on the third shot.
The first two got a little sideways but after a few adjustments we started getting better results. Persistence pays off.

The Needle And The Damage Done...
First, second and third shots and a view from the back of the target (a perfectly innocent 4' long 2" x 12").
The first and third shot penetrated but the second one got totally sideways. The secret seemed to be smaller spud sabots.
Golf Ball Test
02/12/2006
Q: What's Small, Round, Pink And Goes 300 Mph?
A: These.
Our next ammunition test will be golf balls (painted pink for visibility). A friend of mine says that golf balls can be driven through 3/8" plywood so we ought to be able to do at least that well with the BFSG. We'll use a cloth or paper sabot with a little WD40 to help seal and lubricate. I wonder where I can borrow a helmet...

Strike One!
Missed the target all together with this shot but managed to nail a dead pine tree. Lousy aim but nice penetration. (Insert your own joke here.)

Strike Two!
This one almost got ugly. That little sucker came straight back at us and nearly nailed my buddy's '06 Mustang convertible. I'd hate to have to commit Seppuku with a 3" pocket knife.
(Note the little dimple marks in the impact crater! Sweet...)

Entry and Exit Wounds
Like a hot knife through butter. Half inch (well, 15/32") is just no challenge. I gotta try 3/4" next time.
We used TP with vegetable oil sprayed on the outside to make the sabot (note the TP in the upper exit wound). Worked like a charm but it made quite a mess. Maybe cloth next time.
3/4" Plywood Test

We'll Call This One A Tie
In what may be my final Golf Ball vs. Plywood test I think we have a tie.
At 3/4" I just can't muster enough velocity to reliably push a golf ball through the plywood. This shot almost made it but two others bounced off without doing much damage.

Lightening Bolt Projectile Design
Take some 2 1/4" rubber washers, some 1 5/8" steel washers, a 3/8" bolt, a nut and a piece of 1" PVC and what do you have?
The new Lightening Bolt Projectile. (This is an improved version with 1" washers on each end for extra mass and strength.) This thing exceeded my wildest expectations...

"Oh Hell Yeah!"
Our first launch of the Lightening Bolt was a smashing success. Note the wood and target paper stuck to the front of the projectile.
My coconspirator on this new ammo test was seen trying to figure out how to mount a BFSG on his attack aircraft.

Lightening Bolt In Flight
In this grainy, high speed, low light image you can see the new Laser Sight dot and the new Lightening Bolt projectile in flight.
In the next image you can see just how effective the Lightening Bolt projectile really is.

Lightening Does Strike Twice
Hell, it struck about five times here. The uppermost hole was from the last shot (pictured above).
The rest of the damage was from other Lightening Bolts and a few golf ball attempts.

A Short But Impressive Life
After five direct hits the Lightening Bolt Projectile failed. It looks like the front washers deformed and then the PVC broke.
I really didn't expect it to survive more than one strike. Perhaps a 2" x 12" test is called for...
